Many readers did, so I wrote this novella about their journey home. I hope enjoy this opening scene.
PERFECT MOMENTS
By
AUTUMN JORDON

Under the watchful eyes of the Frankfort authorities, the C-130J’s engines roared to life as Corporal Elizabeth Kincaid and twenty other members of her U.S. National Guard unit and two platoons of army personnel made their way across the tarmac. Finally they were beginning the last leg home.
With her head bowed against her shoulder to protect herself against chilling sleet that fell from a January night sky, she clutched her carry-on bag and hurried on the quick, confident heels of a larger than life soldier. She feared flying more than she feared snakes, and noting the grounds crew deicing the huge cargo plane didn’t help calm the trepidation eating away at her stomach lining. She wished her husband, Bob, was here, holding her hand, but he wasn’t. He had rotated home two days ago with his entire unit, landed safely in Colchester, and was now home with their daughters, Jillian and Katy. Knowing her whole life was over four thousand miles away and she was about to get on a brick of ice that would fly eighty thousand feet above a very isolated, very deep, very cold ocean was depressing as hell. She had to keep in mind that in nine hours she would be in Bob’s arms. She hoped she survived the next nine hours.
She looked up at the stairs leading to the brightly lit cabin entry and hesitated. A thin film of ice covered the hand railing below her gloved fingers. A solider stood nearby and repeated over and over to each person mounting the metal stairway to be mindful of their steps. He must’ve noticed her apprehension because he stopped his mantra and smiled; a smile meant to reassure her that she and everyone else would be fine. Their government held them in its highest regard and would not put them in danger on their last leg home after serving their country.
Elizabeth climbed one step. She could do this. No fear.
Before she entered the plane, she glanced over her shoulder and viewed her last glimpse of Germany. She hadn’t seen much of the country- only from the air as they flew in this morning from an undisclosed middle-east location, and from inside the airport. Maybe one day she and Bob would visit Europe again, but for now all she wanted was to be in her Vermont home. She longed to hold her two little girls again, smell their sweet, innocent scent and see the joy in their eyes as they related their experiences this year with Santa. She missed them so much her heart ached.
Heat whooshed out of overhead duct vents and filled the metal belly. The warmth was a welcomed relief from the frigid German winter outside. Elizabeth’s eyes lifted to an American flag that hung above an Apache helicopter tarped down in the plane’s center.
Soldiers quickly found places in rows of cushioned seats that had been installed upon the plane’s spine and continued back to the Apache’s nose. Behind the helicopter, the remaining cavity appeared filled with more equipment and pallets of weapons.
A dozen cushioned seats had replaced the usual jump-seats along the sidewalls and Elizabeth grabbed one just in front of the plane’s wings where she’d heard it was safest place to be in case of an accident. Quickly she stored her backpack under her feet. She latched her seatbelt and then firmly planted her feet on the plane’s floor and as far out of the way for incoming personnel as possible. The action was silly, but her soles pressed against a solid surface gave her an ounce of comfort.
She looked at her cell’s screen. Takeoff was scheduled in fifteen minutes at 8:30 p.m. in this time zone. Right now, it was only 2:15 p.m. back home. The flight took eight hours and thirty minutes. They were due to land in Colchester at 11:30 p.m. EST. She couldn’t wait.
In between soldiers passing by, Elizabeth slipped her phone into the side pocket of her bag under her seat.
A moment later, a man who reminded her of a boy from back home literally dropped onto the seat next to her right. Rylan Wright, the boy from Black Moose, Vermont, was a junior in high school and this man didn’t look a day older. Well, his five o’clock shadowed jawline made him appear slightly older. The name stitched in black into his uniform read Jenkins. His insignia identified him as an E-4 Specialist.
“Ma’am,” he said, dipping his head in a nod. His smile was thin but genuine.
“Hello.” She smiled at the word Ma’am. It made her feel matronly, when in reality she would only turn thirty at the stroke of noon Eastern Standard Time on January sixteenth, tomorrow.
Another solider took the seat to her left. The cabin filled quickly with warm bodies and excited chatter.
After storing his gear under his seat, Jenkins settled in and strapped his seat belt. He leaned toward her and spoke loudly so she would hear him over the noise. “Command gave us comfortable seats for the ride. Good. It’s going to be a long flight.”
“Yes. And a long awaited one,” she shouted back.
“I hear you.” He tugged his coat’s zipper down and stretched his neck.
In the rear of the plane the door slowly lifted into place and locked.
“How long has it been since you were state side, home?” she asked, studying his profile. He had a cute nose like Matt Damon and perhaps the longest lashes she’d ever seen.
“Two years.” His smile was a little lopsided and a dimple punctuated his right cheek.
“That is a long time.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“Please, call me Elizabeth.” She tugged off her gloves and offered her hand to him. “Ma’am reminds me of my great-grandmother.”
“Okay, Elizabeth. I’m Avery.” His skin was warm and rough, and during the seconds she held it a smidgen of calm seeped through Elizabeth. Then the front cabin door slammed closed.
“How long has it been for you?” he asked, drawing her attention back to him.
She tugged her seatbelt tighter over the butterflies in her stomach. “Only a six month stint, but it seems like a life time.”
The plane jerked forward and she closed her eyes. This was a military flight. There were no stewardesses or stewards instructing passengers in the plane’s safety procedures. Only barked orders came from a sergeant to remain seated with belts fasten and to expect some turbulence. She swallowed hard.
Jenkins leaned toward her. “You don’t like to fly, do you?”
Elizabeth stopped working her fingers into a knot. “Not really. My husband tells me I nearly break his hand during takeoff.”
He chuckled. “I’m sure it’s not that bad. I’ll talk you through it.” Jenkins positioned his arm against hers on the armrest separating them.
He was a stranger, yet he made her feel safer, so she didn’t pull away. She did as he instructed and took slow, deep breathes and relaxed against the seat like she was a feather about to go air bound. The image he conjured, made her smile.
About three minutes in the air, the plane rocked to the side and Elizabeth’s shoulder made contact with Jenkins’. She closed her eyes and remembered the moment her and Bob met.
They cry cabin-fever as soon as the ball in Times Square drops. Why is that?

If you’re one of the millions who suffers each year from SAD or cabin-fever would you love to, well, not suffer?

I love winter. I’m not one to suffer from SAD or cabin-fever, but my body does slow down and the mind seems to say, “Okay, if you’re not going to move, I might as well rest too.” I didn’t want that to happen to me this year. I’ve set some pretty aggressive goals for 2020, so I decided last week before the old year was waving Tata to get myself primed for the coldest months if the year here in NE USA. I began to dance in the morning as a form of exercise. In just one week, my energy level has soared. Yes, even after a very busy holiday season, I’ve have tons of energy.

If you don’t believe me that dancing can do this, here are some articles verifying the benefits of shaling your booty. Check them out.
IT'S NOT NANO. IT'S WAY BETTER!One of the reasons I love winter is this January event, The Ruby Slippered-Sisterhood Winter Writing Fest. I can't wait to join the many friends I've met over the past years and dig deep into a new work. If you're a writer and are interested, read on.

Announcing the TENTH ANNUAL RUBY SLIPPERED SISTERHOOD WINTER WRITING FESTIVAL!!! Starting this FRIDAY JANUARY 10, 2020!

If you’ve joined us for the Winter Writing Festival any time during the past eight years, you know it can be a tremendously productive time, with lots of inspiring support and the magic of REGULAR WRITING SPRINTS held in our cozy Chat Room!

It’s completely free, and all writers are welcome—the more the merrier!

Through the bleakest part of winter—January 10 through February 28—the Winter Writing Festival is here to keep your creative fires burning, with camaraderie, encouragement, fun prizes for participants, and as much virtual hot-chocolate (and virtual cookies!!) as you please. ‘Cause nobody’s Muse can resist a party!
Here’s the beauty part: unlike NaNoWriMo and other writing challenges that (much as we love them!!) have a one-size-fits-all approach, the Ruby Winter Writing Festival is designed for you.

No matter what stage you’re at right now (brainstorming, plotting, free-writing, fast-drafting, slow-drafting, revising, layering, polishing…or any combination of the above) the Ruby Winter Writing Festival wants to give you fuel for your winter writing fire.
You visualize what you'd love to accomplish by 2021. You’re totally focused and you’re determined to meet those goals until ...da, da, da! …your first set back.

If your goal is to get up earlier, the set back will be the morning you oversleep. If your goal is to lose weight, your set back will be the first sweet you’ll gobble up. If your goal is to write every day, the setback will be the day life took over and you didn’t have a minute to write a line.

When working towards your goals, it’s important to keep in mind that there will be setbacks. As sure as the sun will rise in the east, there will be setbacks. They happen. How you respond to them will determine if you'll make your goals.
Like a cowboy who gets thrown off his horse, you need to get off your butt, dust yourself off and get right back in the saddle.

Below are a few tips for making your 2020 goals.

1) Make your goals reasonable. Something you can control. And be specific.
Ie: (Non-writing related) I want to lose twenty pounds in 2020. (Writing related) I want to write my next book- 375 pages.

2) Write the goals down. Yes you can have more than one. Post them where you'll see them every day.

3) Break the goal or goals into manageable bits.
Ie: (NWR) I want to lose five pounds by March. Five more by June and the final ten by the November 1st. (WR) I'll write 10 pages a week.

4) If you’re the type of person who needs to report to someone, an accountability partner, find one and set up a schedule to report. IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep in mind there will be weeks, maybe several in a row, when you are the one having trouble making your goal. It’s okay. There will be weeks when you will shine.

5) Don’t get depressed when a step toward the goal is not met on time. Life happens. Computers crash. Kids get sick. Husbands come home with candy hearts. Enjoy life. A happy person is more productive.

6) Mondays are the first day of the week for many of us and the day of the week we seem to be most productive. It’s a mind thing. If you have more time to exercise or write on the weekend, try thinking of Saturday as being your first day of the week. Make a calendar labeling Saturday as the first day of the week if that will help you. Again, it’s a mind thing.

7) For the most part, we know our schedules for the week. Plan the minutes or hours you’ll work toward your goal. Think if that time as part of your work schedule.

8) Make a list of things that have stopped you from making your goal in the past. Post that list too and don’t go there. Ie: Television? Shut it off. Social media? Stay off line until your goal is met. Over volunteering? Say no this time.

9) Remember the old adage, 'Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today'. Just do it. DO it today.
Here in the northeast America it’s the month where mother Earth’s rebirth truly begins. Every year during this month, I get anxious to start projects—lots of them. If you follow me on Facebook, you saw I started flower and veggie seeds weeds ago. I’ve always had a hard time starting petunias, so this year I turned plastic muffins containers into little hot houses and look at the results.

I’m going to have pots of beautiful fragrant blooms. {Reminder to self--transplant sunflowers into bigger pots. They’re already a foot tall.} I can’t wait until May when I can plant them outside. Until then, I’ll work my garden and flower beds and get them ready for the babies.
I want to thank everyone who helped spread the word this week about my Loved By Darkness around the world deal. The novel made and held Amazon #1 Best Seller in mystery or romantic suspense in Canada and Australia for three days. That is huge in my world. In the UK, LBD reached the top twenty in mystery. And in the USA, it ranked as high as #49, also in mystery. And I owe it all to you, fans of my works. Thank you. Thank you!

I hope those of you who downloaded it this past week will love it and will please consider leaving a review.

Thank you all again, from the bottom of my heart. AJ
I believe you’re the same. Otherwise why would you be reading my blog. Lol

I thought I’d share with you what I found interesting or enjoyable this past month. (The links are Amazon as I’m a Kindle reader)

For my romantic suspense mystery fans, I need to tell you about Along Came A Cowboy by Bev Pettersen. Actually, I read this book right after it came out. It was great. It’s a little different than Bev’s other works. It starts off reading like a contemporary romance but then IT happens. IT being a murder. You’re going to love and hate her characters. Give it a try.
Soon I’m headed to Ireland. I’ve never been and can’t wait. So this month I purchased A Week In Winter by Irish author Maeve Binchy. Wonderful! If you like novels where you learn about the characters one by one and then how they all come together and help each other over-come their issues, you’ll love this book. It also gave me a sense of the people living in Ireland. I can’t wait to meet them. If you have any books that you enjoyed by Irish authors or about Ireland, please share with me.
Some days I know I should’ve stayed in bed. Yesterday was one.

My day started off great. Really it did. I got up, did some writing and then only left five minutes late for my monthly meeting with the Pocono-Lehigh writers. It’s so good to get together face-to-face with other writers. We share what is going on in our personal lives, learning that none of us have an easy time of it to find moments to write. However, despite day jobs and family obligations we keep on putting pen to paper every chance we can.

After my meeting, there were errands to run, groceries to buy, dogs and kids to fed. You know the drill. You’re living it too. Any who… In rushing to catch up and maybe find those elusive moments to write, I turned on the oven in preparation for dinner and headed into my office to type out a conversation I had running in my head between Aden Nash, my next U.S. Marshal hero, and his partner.

About ten minutes later, one of the boys yelled the cookies were hot and my heart literally leaped against my breast bone. I scrambled out of my fictional world, leaving my chair spinning, and raced down the hallway to learn the cookies and rolls I’d just bought had their plastic wrappers shrink-wrapped around them.
Needless to say I was upset with myself. One thoughtless action might have cost my family our home.

Now, I could’ve dwelled on it and let the festering ruin what had been a pretty good day, but instead I first thanked God for watching over us and then went back my office and wrote out the physical and emotional responses I had just experienced, because someday one of my characters will do the same stupid thing.

Have you ever done something as stupid? Please share. Don’t let me feel like the only time-challenged person in the world.
I really like my day job. Yes. It’s Friday, but if was any other day of the week, I’d tell you the same thing. I like what I do. However, my passion is telling a great story~working with the characters and writing my thoughts and theirs down. Since I don’t work this weekend, I’ll be working on my next romantic suspense.

This time of year in the northeast, some people like go to the movies, or skiing, or bowling , or shopping the white sales, but me, I look forward to spending time with my fiction cast. Then, I’ll catch up on my own reading.

What will you be doing this weekend?

Recently I started a new novel, and two days later and I stopped. I had the perfect first chapter which ended with a lot of questions, however there was something stopping me from continuing. I knew from experience that when this happens something was wrong with my storyline. Not probably wrong. Definitely wrong. It took me a week to figure out what was hindering me. I don’t like to hurt others, and as a writer of romantic suspense/mystery I must.

I was born a kind kindhearted, old soul. I love helping people and rarely do I lash out at anyone. And if you connect with any of my fans of my Perfect Love line, they’ll tell you I’m those books. I’m the Hallmark, Gilmore Girls type.

I am a nice person. I’m not apologizing, but I’m also reader who loves a good suspense or mystery.

You’ve probably heard the old adage, ‘Write what you know.’ Well in today’s world authors can research and learn with the click of a button. So, the new old adage is ‘Write what you would love to read’, and therefore I’m going to. I’m going to hurt someone today. In spite of this evil act, I’m also going to bring together two soulmates who probably wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t been so determined to commit a crime.

Yesterday, I took time to do somethings that I haven’t done in a while and which gave me pleasure in the past. One was to pull out old cds and listen to the music great artists produced a decade ago. A few of them were pure country and about lost love.

I’ve always been in awe of song writers and poets. They can express such raw emotion and conjure up powerful imagery is so few words. My admiration for them is one of the reasons I made Carrie in Perfect Hearts a song writer. Carrie had that awesome ability.

Being a writer is fun, because like actors we get to travel to different lands, and times, and become anything we’d want.

Fall in love with Carrie and Luke in Perfect Hearts. It’s on sale this month for $.99 at Amazon.

Enjoy!

Aren’t Sundays the best? Especially when you’re off work and the sun is shining bright. While I do enjoy chatting with people at day job, I’m a pure-at-heart-homebody. I just love days in which I don’t need to be out the door by a certain time. Days that the realm of possibilities in limitless.

One thing I love to do on days like this is connect with friends. This morning, I spent several hours online with a friend Lenee as we worked on our new works. Silently, we wrote lines that we hope readers will gobble up for years to come. I also, spent time with three grandsons, making king-size breakfasts for all. There is no meal better than a homemade Sunday breakfast.

What does the afternoon hold for me? My options are wide open. I could wash my car. I do like driving a shiny car. I could take a walk and feel the winter’s air on face. I could binge watch Outlander, again. Yup I’m a fan. I could grab that hard-cover book I bought before Christmas and get lost in another world. Whatever I do, I know I’ll enjoy. I hope you enjoy your day too!

Tell me what your favorite Sunday breakfast is.
What am I talking about?
Recently, I lost the diamond from my engagement ring. Every woman whose ever been in love and has received one knows how special the ring is. It symbolizes the love he feels for you. When you lose you DH, as I did several years ago, the meaning of that ring amplifies by tens of thousands. It’s the remaining physical reminder of his love.

When I realized I lost my diamond, my brother and son immediately answered my call for help to check the drains in the house. When we didn’t find it, I was heartbroken and reduced to tears. My brother immediately said, “Don’t worry. I’ll buy you one twice as big.” More tears came. While I appreciated his gesture to make me feel better, I fell deeper into depression because no one in my house (all guys) understood what I was feeling. Or at least that is what I thought, until I posted on Facebook. I never mentioned anything on social media about my DH’s fight with cancer or when I lost him. In fact, I hadn’t posted anything for more than six months afterwards, notta, nothing. After this experience I feel maybe I was wrong not to, because the overwhelming emotional support from my followers has been tremendous. Maybe I wouldn’t have spent a year fighting depression if I’d opened up.

While trying to work on my next hero, this experience reminded that men do think, act and express their emotions differently. They look at the world as if it’s black and white instead of through shades of gray. They express themselves differently, sometimes through jokes, or not at all. Their hearts are encased in armor while we carry ours exposed to all. They talk differently. If you’d want to read a great blog on this topic, look at Ruby Rita Henuber’s blog GUY SPEAK http://www.rubyslipperedsisterhood.com/guy-speak-2/. She nails the subject.

I’m going to keep in mind the reactions I’m getting from men over my lost while I work sketch out my next hero. Do you have any examples of a good-hearted man just being a guy?

FYI: It's day 5 of my great diamond search and still no luck, but I'm not going to lose hope.

First, I will say I don’t think any writer takes a day off completely. We have characters in our heads that never take a day off, or if they do, another one takes over the chatting. It’s like a senate filibuster taking place in the space between our ears and the only way to get them to shhh is to acknowledge them and give them your attention. I usually ask them questions they have to pondered like, “Why the h*ll would you kill off nice, old Mrs. Petty?” And “How did the rope used to kill her end up the copy of Hitchcock’s novel Rope and does it have a meaning?” They need to have a damn good reason for their actions before talking to me again.

While they ponder, my writer’s cap if off. So, what do I do with myself? My life is similar to yours. Today, I’m off of my day job also-- you know the one that brings in the small but steady paycheck-- I’ve got a long chore list: laundry, a bit of cleaning, grocery shopping with my elderly mother in addition family care and interaction.

I started my day by taking care of me. I took a short walk in the early morning dew/rainy. It really was misty and took this shot of some of my Irises. I love gardening and if all goes well today, I’ll be planting more flowers and some veggies late this afternoon. Then, comes the time I’m praying isn’t stolen from me. Time to grab a cup of tea, put my feet up, and enjoy the book I’m reading now, Gone Girl. Yes, I know it’s been out for years.

So, what are you doing today? What are you enjoying reading? I’m always looking for a good book.

Thank you to all of the readers who continue to follow me here. It seems blogging has taken a backseat to social media, but I still like to read my favorite authors' posts.

I'm really excited to announce the up-coming release of my next book, Loved By Darkness. Loved By Darkness is the third stand-alone novel in my U.S. Marshal series C.U.F.F. Both my editor and a first reviewer has told me that this is the best story I've written. They feel it's an award-winner. I hope it wins your heart and that you will chat it up at work and social media.

Let me tell you a little about it. Many people ask where do you get your ideas. This one came to me while I was on vacation in St. Augustine visiting follow Ruby sister Rita Henuber two years. I'd over heard a conversation about a missing child and while we sat on the white sands watching the waves the opening of the story unfolded in my mind. As all stories tend to do, it changed as months went by. Why? Because of the characters. To the non-writer that might seem like a crazy notion, but they really do come to life in our minds and eventually they tell us what needs to happen next. Seriously, I'm not crazy. Just ask any writer.

Why did it take me two years? One reason was I was writing Perfect Fall for my Perfect Love Series. I'm not a writer who can be writing two novels at once. My characters demand my full attention. And second, a lot of research went into this story. I learned about sailing, how to stop a plane from taking off. I learned about psychological disorders, police procedurals involving the U.S, Marshals and much more. I don't want to tell you what because of spoilers. And finally, because I wanted this book to be the best I've ever done.

Making Christmas perfect isn’t Dylan Kincaid’s forte, but he needs to make it happen, for his nieces. Darcy Witherspoon arrives in Black Moose, Vt., needing an escape and a holiday dreams are made of. They team up for the short run, but Christmas magic has something everlasting in store for them.
I was young and naïve. Two years prior we'd seen the end of the Vietnam War.

My husband was on assignment. I was a thousand miles away from home and family. Not a long distance now days, but in the seventies I might’ve well been across the globe. There was no instant communications. No pictures sent across cyber-space or I-phones. No I love you, miss you, take care messages coming back at me. I had just had my first child, a boy, and I felt so alone.

The walls were not decorated with funny characters, but were clean, stark. There were no televisions in the ward. No radios. My meals were not served to me in bed, but rather placed on a long table in the center of the room where my trio of fellow new-mothers gathered to eat whatever everyone else was served in the mess hall that day. Strangely, I felt comfortable. I was an ARMY BRAT. My son was now an ARMY BRAT—born into the 101st Airborne.

With nothing but time to heal, I scanned at the empty beds and wondered how many men had been treated here? My pain was nothing compared to what they must felt. Some had died in this very room. In that defining moment, I grew. A sense of pride like I’d never felt before welled through me as the sorrowful notes of taps floated across the base. I still get choke-up every time I hear the woeful tune.

The nurse handed me my baby. I stared at his innocence while his tiny fingers curled around mine and I thanked all the souls that had given so much so that my son would know freedom like none other in the world.

Please take a few moments this holiday weekend and remember the women and men who gave so much of themselves for your way of life, for your children and for you.

Ps: I’d be proud to have you list the branch and division of any family heroes who’ve

served or are serving listed in your comment.Autumn Jordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14168172253998245307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7085485154799354400.post-16519913186180592932017-11-08T03:00:00.000-08:002017-11-08T03:00:03.830-08:00Thanksgiving or Bust!

This year, Thanksgiving is at your house and you’re beginning to wonder why you agreed to host the family event. Relax. I’ve got tips for you.

Why should you take my advice? Well, I’ve hosted Thanksgiving, among other events, for more than twenty years for small, large and huge groups. And, I’m not only an award-winning author, but also— a long time ago— an award-winning restaurant manager. So, I have some experience at preparing feasts for many. Organization is one of my talents.

It’s always good to have a plan, so let’s start.

First, you need to do is decide three things. What style of dining you want your party to be—buffet or sit down. The style will play a part in your menu. You certainly don’t want to serve soup at a buffet, at least not at your home. Too many opportunities for spills.

Second, how many will be attending your celebration? If you really envision a sit down dinner, you’ll have to limit the guests, or have a second sitting, even a third sitting. Extra sittings is not my idea of a fun-filled day.

Third, menus for Thanksgiving can range from the traditional Norman Rockwell’s portrayal of roast turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce to Wild Salmon and rice. Make the holiday your own by combining traditions of guests. If invited family or friends offer to make dishes, let them, but ask if they intend to cook or bake their dish before arriving. Seriously, I’ve had someone bring their unbaked dish to dinner, expecting room in my oven and time to bake it.

My last tip has nothing to do with the meal. Activities. You’ll have a household full and while dinner is part of the agenda, it’s not the whole day.

While I love watching football not everyone does, so have other activities planned. My children and grandchildren love playing bingo. A game set can be purchased at a dollar store along with prizes. And while very few think of November as a time to fly a kite, it is great fun and a way to burn off the 5 thousand it is said Americans consume on Thanksgiving .
Now with your style, guests and menu decided, make a game plan.

Two weeks out from the holiday:
1) Confirm guests and time.
2) Review recipes and make shopping list for all dishes.
3) Anytime this week, check china, silverware, glassware and all serving dishes and platters, including salt and pepper shakers (wash & fill), butter dishes, gravy bowls, bread baskets, etc. Wash them and store them until ready to set your table.

If you’re planning to use paper or plastic-ware, buy it this week, especially if you’re thinking of holiday theme. You don’t have time to run from store to store searching for the last few packs on the shelves.
4) Check tablecloths, napkins, and any other decorative items, such as candles and candleholders. I’ve come for my candles only to remember they were used during the last storm. Purchase wanted items now.
5) During this week, you could actually arrange your furniture and set your table to ensure enough elbow room. It’s better to have the space all planned now then to try to arrange it during the days you’ll be baking and cooking. Arrange for extra necessary table space or seating.

One week out from the holiday:

1) Double check your grocery list and head to the store. (It’s a good idea to buy extra plastic containers and Ziploc bags for guests to take leftovers home.)
2) Think about your cooking timeline. I have one oven and a lot to bake, so I start my timeline at 1 pm, since my family usually sits down then and I work backward. The star of my dinner is the turkey, which I know must come out of the oven by 11:45. It has to sit and can be kept warm. So, depending on the size of the bird is when the turkey must go in my oven. 11:45 works, because my stuffing and corn pudding needs to bake for an hour so it can go in the oven then, along with mash potatoes and yams or any other dishes that need to be warmed. (It’s a good idea, especially if you have limited space, to put all baking dishes in the oven beforehand to ensure they fit) At 12:45, those food items come out and rolls go in for the last fifteen minutes while all other food is put into dishes and placed on the table. During the last hour, veggies can be steamed or warmed.
3) Cleaning. Honestly, I do a light house cleaning before the holiday, because the house is going to need a deep clean after the crowd leaves.

Two days before the holiday:

1) Some dishes can be made now. I find stuffing and candied yams taste much better when made ahead.
2) If you possibly can, set your table.
3) Make ice if you don’t have an ice maker.

Day before holiday:

1) Other dishes can be made early. Ie: mashed potatoes, pies, desserts, veggie trays.
2) I put my applesauce and cranberry sauces into bowls and refrigerate.
3) I’m live in northeast PA and have already used my outside gas grill as an extra cold storage unit for items prepared ahead. Think out of the box when space is limited.

The holiday:
You’re organized and ready. Stay with your timeline and if something hiccups, don’t sweat it. Your friends and family only will know what you’ve done not what wasn’t done.

Neither is interested in a holiday affair, but the magic of Christmas has something more everlasting in store for the couple. An absolutely perfect love!
But what can you do?
There are a lot of inexpensive ways to decorate for Thanksgiving.

First, make a thankful tree. All you need is a planter pot, a few branches and some colored paper to cut out colored leaves. You can stick the branches into an existing pot but be careful not to disturb the root system of the plant. Over the next few weeks, have everyone write down everything they’re thankful for and hang it on the tree. Read them on thanksgiving.

Second, if you live near a field, gather some wild grass (Or buy at craft store) and fill some empty jars. The jars don’t need to be all the same size or shape. Mix them up and make the design your own. Tape a holiday greeting to the jars.

Do you have clear candle holders, or wine glasses, or truffle dishes? Fill them with dry beans, peas and corn. Later you can make soup.

I have a lot of baskets. When I saw this next idea, I was like slapping my head. I can do this no problem. I have pine cones and branches and I’m sure I can use leftover pumpkins and gourds. I bet they’re really cheap now that Halloween is history. CAUTION: DO NOT leave a lighted candle unattended!

The next idea is CHEAP. I’m sure you have pictures hanging on your walls. Print off a few pages with holiday greetings and tape them to the frame. I did this at Easter and then I forgot to take one down. I left it there in the frame and waited to see of anyone would say something. In August, my mother asked me why I had an Easter bunny up. We had a good laugh.

My grandkids love to do crafts when they visit and I love sending them home with reminders of our fun day together. Here a few ideas to keep them busy and add to the day. This next idea is similar to the last. A little finger print and colored paper and viola! Tape them to the frames.

Pine cones and paper cups can easily be made into turkeys with colored paper, feathers and sticky eyes. Last Thanksgiving my gang made turkeys out of paper cups. The wrote their names on them. On Thanksgiving, at their place setting, the cups contained applesauce. They loved it. You could put a dessert in them. Jello anyone?

It is easier than ever before to find ideas to decorate your home for the holidays. Just google.

In a few days, I will share my expertise on getting ready for the feast. I always had twenty or more people to fed. I just love this holiday. Until then, have fun!
My only companion, the moon. With his hair over one eye, he watched over me—saved me from the dark shadows. I gazed up into his face and wondered about the billions of people who’ve gone on to the next world before me, the ones who had dumped their troubles on him. The ones who had shared with him their dreams. The ones who had laughed and loved under his twilight.

I wondered about their stories. Some are known by all of us. Some by a few.
As I walked, I gaze over the valley that was my great grandparent’s farm, now divided among their children’s children. I know my great grandparent’s names. I can tell you they lay in the cemetery on the rise to the east. I can tell you their birth and death dates. However, I don’t know what they were like as people. Did they enjoy music or reading? Were reserve or outgoing? What was their favorite time of the year? Or their favorite foods? Did they believe and trust in the Almighty? What were their dreams?

We have pictures of course with names scribbled on the back, but by who? We have ledgers and invoices of transactions stored in the old farm house attic, but no personal memoirs. Knowing this, sadness crept in my heart as I crossed an open field. I wished someone had left behind their words for me. Told me who they were. Left a clue as to who I called my pass.

At that moment, the moon winked at me and from within I heard, “You were given the gift of the written word. Why haven’t you left behind words for your children or grandchildren or great grandchildren? Not all will seek them, but there will be one who will. Like you, they will cherish the memories you share and pass them on to another who well cherish their heritage. And so on.”

Stunned, I gaped into his one eye. The ancient man was right. He winked again and turned into a cloud, probably to advise someone else. I finished one swallow of crisp night and with a light step headed for home. I pulled from a drawer a diary given to me one Christmas years ago and wrote; November 4, 2017. Within these pages you will come to know who I was, what I felt passionate about, and what were my dreams. My hope is I will teach something of the past, something that will make you a stronger person and that I’ll touch you in some way. With love, your heritage.Autumn Jordonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14168172253998245307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7085485154799354400.post-9245553209438274872017-11-01T12:33:00.003-07:002017-11-01T12:33:54.788-07:00I'm A Torn WomanI’m a torn woman. I’m torn between two men at the moment, fictional of course. One being Ross Poldark (PBS series Poldark). I fell for Ross over a year ago. After watching season one of Poldark, it took me all of two seconds to buy season two so that I could binge watch it. I nearly died waiting for the next episodes to air. Now, I’m into season three, watching an episode a week, and waiting for the next show is killing me.

Of course, Britain’s Captain Ross is tall, dark and handsome, but he is also strong, brave and has a compassionate heart. He is the man who will give his last loaf of bread to your family so that they will survive and will wait to hunt food for himself. He is a hero. His roots are set and he loves his family and friends he will die to protect them. I sigh thinking of him.

The second man is one I recently found after a dear friend and fellow author, Rita Henuber, insisted that I watch Outlander (STARZ series). His name is James Faser. The Scotsman’s quick wit, adorable smile, hard-muscled built, fearlessness, and sensitive heart won me over way before season one episode seven, ‘The Wedding.’ (CAUTION that episode is smokin’)

Both story lines are wonderful, filled with a cast of life-like secondary characters whose human weaknesses and strengths cause layers and layers of conflicts. There is also rivalry between nations in each. And then there is love. Love of country, friends, family, and if your romantic they’re plenty of those scenes too.
I love watching sagas like these. I can’t imagine writing them, but I love them never the less. I’ve even started to watch the first seasons over again, so that I can learn more about character development. I haven’t read any of the books for either series, but I plan to study them also.

If you’re looking for a good series to watch, I would recommend either of these.
Let me know what you think.
