Let's Dance

Cursor, Cursor, Cursor…

Let’s dance. January is a depressing month for many. Some of you might begin to cry cabin-fever as soon as the ball in Times Square drops. Why is that? If you’re one of the millions who suffers each year from SAD or cabin-fever would you love to, well, not suffer?

I love winter. I’m not one to suffer from SAD or cabin-fever, but my body does slow down and the mind seems to say, “Okay, if you’re not going to move, I might as well rest too.” I didn’t want that to happen to me this year. I’ve set some pretty aggressive goals for 2010 (listed under my 1/1/10 blog), which is going to be a very busy with two sons getting married and a grandson to arrive in late April, AND two books coming out (one in 21 days. Yikes!), so I decided last week before the old year was waving Tata to get myself primed for the coldest months if the year, here in the NE USA.

I began to dance in the morning as a form of exercise. I love to dance. My husband not so much. So, the minute he is out the door, I’m struttin’ my stuff to any beat I want. In just one week, my energy level has soared. Yes, even after a very busy holiday season, I’ve got tons of energy.

If you don’t believe me that dancing can do this, here are some articles verifying the benefits of shaling your booty. Check them out.

Another great thing about dancing, you don’t need a video or a special piece of equipment or to go out of the house. Just crank up the music and dance. Dance in the sunlight. Dance you way through January.

Do you have a way to fend off SAD or cabin fever you’d like to share? Or have you seen another article on dancing for health? If so, please share the link.

  2. Then just shake it, Diane. Seriously I feel so much better. Feel the beat.

  3. Now if your body is too old like me, to shake my booty. I find that getting out in the sun helps. They've proven that the lack of sunlight and getting outside, has a lot to do with SAD

  4. My favorite song is "I Hope You Dance".. I so agree with you, Autumn. Music and movement is key for me to make a happy, healthy day. Even with my bad knees.. I dance in a chair quite regularly. And have a great time doing it..even if it looks a little strange! Thanks for the good post!

  5. Mary, I'm no expert. I only know what I've read which is a lack of Vitamin D is a bif factor for the onset of SAD. Vitamin D can be upped by sunlight. So, lady get outside and dance in the those rays.

  6. Good for you, Christine. Dancing does lift the spirits, doesn' it? I love the song too. I heard a new one this morning. I can't think of title. I'll catch it tomorrow and let you know. Couple shuts off the TV and come on let's dance. Great video. Great sound. Fun to dance to. Thanks for posting.

  7. I love to be reminded of the simple solutions. I like to dance and if I wasn't in a camper, I'd jump right in. Have to wait until it warms up here in Charleston to dance outside. next week I think.

  9. What a great way to break the awful winter monotony. Dancing is great exercise. Since I can't dance and have the grace if a rhino, I'd have to be entirely alone to try it. But I will try dancing and see if it takes me out of the winter blahs.

  10. Oh, Carolyn, I feel the same way. I need a couple glasses of wine to get out on the dance floor at a party. BUT alone, I'm a dancin' fool. Let me know how you feel in a week. Okay?

  11. I love to dance and did it regularly for years "just because." Now, with dh home all the time, not so much, but my butt is beginning to look like a dirigible so I may just start shaking my bootie despite his presence!

  14. I hope those reading the blog today realize that, Kathy. A simple activity like dancing to one song can really help keep the winter blues at bay.

  18. I love the idea of dancing through January, AJ -- what a wonderful way of beating the blahs. Especially on the days where it's just too nasty to get out into the fresh air! I'll start tomorrow morning (when no one else is here, of course!). :)
